Beaujol’en Scene is a popular Beaujolais Day festival in Lyon – the closest city to the Beaujolais wine-growing region. Soon to celebrate its 30th anniversary, the ticketed event is organised by the Young Farmers of the Rhône and takes place in the wonderful setting of Place St Jean in central Lyon.
A celebration loved by locals and visitors alike, the festivities take place over two days (starting the day before Beaujolais Day) and include guided tastings of Beaujolais Nouveau, entertainment and other surprises.
One of the event’s highlights, and a great opportunity to appreciate the significance of the wine to the region, is the arrival of the first barrel of Beaujolais Nouveau (often by riverboat). The barrel is then rolled through the streets of Lyon to the Place St Jean, accompanied with great fanfare including a marching band and torchlit procession.
With a population of around 500,000, Lyon is a compact city with much to offer visitors who might come for Beaujolais Day and then stay for the architecture, history, cafes and numerous Michelin-starred restaurants.
